Here is a guide (in Excel format) compiled by a friend from Forces Tavern for various places in California, Colorado, DC, Florida, Maryland, Nevada, Virginia and Texas--it's color coded and everything! (Thanks, beachsmoker!) The information should be fairly up-to-date. |
Dining guide for Smokers in South Carolina
A smoker's guide to Europe and beyond (part one) (Monday April 7, 2008) -- Words from the rockin' world of Joe Jackson!
Roll up for the newest travel trend: smoking tourism (Monday April 7 2008) -- In a post-ban market, businesses that once held the antismoking niche lose many of their customers to businesses that have since been forced to become antismoking. Now, there's a HUGE void in the smoker-friendly niche--and some companies and places for tourism--want to cash-in.
Many individual businesses, notably pubs, are protesting the English ban with non-compliance, risking harassment and legal penalties. For example, The Dog and Partridge, The Swan Hotel and The Dog Inn. There are many more but you always need to investigate places before giving them your patronage. (Unfortunately, the hospitality industry isn't as reliable as it once was. See Marriott for an example of antismoking's money-grubbing hypocrisy. One wonders if the cigar aficionados at the Marriott conference were required to sleep in antismoking rooms or pay hefty fines--kinda makes cigar smokers look like wimps, LOL! Wasn't Bill Clinton a cigar smoker? Thanks to Audrey Silk of NYC CLASH for the heads-up on this matter! More of the insanity of Marriott's policies are at freedom2choose from the rather direct, concise and witty Colin Grainger.) Please use the following lists/resources to find good places as well as less hospitable listings. Places that continue to rank high on our "smoker friendly" list and favor freedom over tyranny deserve our patronage and admiration--and they appear to have good food, atmosphere and service!
Before making flight plans, check the smoker-friendly status of airports on your route--and make changes where appropriate. Check out the Airport smoking List (on the left of the page linked here). On the other hand, you can check ANRF's 100% SMOKEFREE U.S. AIRPORTS--oops on them!
Before booking your hotel room, check its status on this smoker-friendly guide list from Freedom2Choose, All hotels, A to Z. (UK)
Hawaiian hotels can be checked for smoker-compatibility at The Smoke Vote. (WebMistress: I have a friend from the web who had taken annual trips to Hawaii with his wife--until the antismoking brigade made the trip just too unfriendly. Sad, isn't it?)
Hotels: That ban smoking
Disneyland Resort hotels go smoke free
Cross Choice Hotels off your list. (This might be cause to be leary of the associated hotels in their chain. One can only investigate and wuestion when making reservations.)
Resorts:
Cross WestGate Resorts off your list. They've decided that they're not only banning smoking, they are actively discriminating against smokers in employment. See Fla. Companies Forbidding Smoking In Private Lives ((POSTED: 11:41 pm EST November 7, 2007, UPDATED: 7:29 am EST November 9, 2007 on local6-dot-com), which reads (emphasis added):
Westgate Resorts, the largest private employer in Central Florida, has banned smoking and won't budge from a policy of not hiring smokers and firing employees who do smoke. This is shortly after another news story broke in Florida, Teacher Shot While On A Smoke Break; also here, Teacher shot outside Fla. high school, Tue Nov 6, 6:17 PM ET).
"When I found out it was legal to discriminate against smokers, I put the policy in place," Westgate president and CEO David Seigel said.
Restaurants: By location, do they permit smoking?
[Check with National Restaurant Association-can't e-mail unless you're a member. Postal mail and telephone number are at Restaurant-dot-com contact Us. ] For the most part, you need to call ahead. For one thing, some places have outside seating where smoking is welcome.
Beware of these places!
In addition, you need to be aware of smoke-free apartment listings. Here is a scary site on what's developing: Smoke-Free housing consultants....kinda makes ya wanna go get some Political Empowerment.
